For Christmas Santa brought our family a fish aquarium. The boys love animals of all kinds and especially fish. The note Santa left said we needed to set up the tank and let it run for a week before putting any fish in the tank. So being the good parents that we are Dave and I promptly set up the tank and let it run for almost one week. 
Despite Hayden asking everyday we held out on getting the fish for almost the full week. On Friday we took a sample of our water into the local Petco to have it tested and to make sure it would be conducive to putting fish in. They did their little PH test and said our water looked fine. They recommended we start with three inexpensive fish just to make sure. So we began looking around at the selection. The boys were really intrigued by the turtles.
After explaining we had come for fish and turtles were a topic for another day we picked out three little electric blue tetras, a coconut shell with moss on it and a fake cracked pot for the fish to swim around and hide from the boys in. We followed the stores instructions implicitly and put the bag with the fish into the water to allow the water temperature to equalize for at least three hours (despite Hayden's many protests). So we finally introduced the fish into the tank and they swan around their new home and seemed to be quite happy. Or as happy as fish can be.

By the time we went to bed two of them were dead and sadly the third one didn't make it through the night. So we are once again fish less. They say it is "new tank syndrome" and we just need to try again with hardier fish. So we will be off to buy some more victims soon. Stay tuned for our aquarium updates.

ReplyDeletehahahaha! Sorry I can't help but laugh at this story. :D I bought a tiny aquarium when I was in college and put a handful of rather exotic fish and a crab in it. They all died not long after. Taking care of "fish" is such a delicate matter! Bettas have lasted the longest on me too.
